Happy Friday!

Well, we have just completed our first full week of school! We had fun making a human number line and painting ten frames with Q-tips in math! Today was also filled with two new events in class, both of which will become familiar routines this year.  We learned a new sight word game the students will be able to play during our Dailies time for "Working with Words" practice.  They also practiced reading poems from last week and this week to themselves and with a partner.  I chose random students to give us a poetry performance and they read a poem of their choice! They should have brought home their poetry folder this weekend to read their practiced poems with you at home.  Have a great Labor Day weekend! :)

Here is a short video of a student playing the sight word game.

Ten Frames

Today was another great day of learning! In math we practiced our ten frame "war" game again! The students had to decide who had the higher number on their ten frame and the winner got to keep both cards for their pile.  We also started talking about number lines.

So fun! Be on the look out for tomorrow's fun math activity! :)

Math and the Equal Sign

Today during math we focused on the meaning of the equal sign.  We discussed that in a number sentence, both sides of the equal sign have to be the same.  Here is an example of a student proving how he knows the number sentence is true.

Your student should have sight words in his or her take home folder.  The bag is marked with an "H" as I have told them that when things are for homework, we will mark them with an H so mom or dad knows.  They should practice these words tonight and tomorrow night so that they can read and write them.

I also would like to share that we were able to read to self independently for 14 minutes today!! This is super awesome, and I am very proud of your young learners. Keep up the good work!

Book Baggies

Your child should be bringing home a book inside their book baggie every night! This is a book they have practiced in class during read to self time. It is extremely important that they bring their book back to school the next day in their book baggie. The books in our classroom are for all children to use, so they need to be brought back so they can return to our library for other readers!! Of course, they can read the book again during read to self, but I do ask that they make it back to school each day.

Also, beginning this week, your child may be bringing home an additional book from our guided reading group. This should be practiced at home as well and brought back the next day! We need these books in the classroom everyday in the case of working on it more in small groups. I appreciate your support with this matter!

Thanks!

Mrs. Baker :)
